San Jose Police Warn of Home Surveillance Burglaries

<p>The San José Police Department is advising San José residents of a recent burglary trend&period; SJPD has received several reports of deceptive tactics used to case unoccupied homes&period; The suspects plant hidden surveillance devices&comma; or pose as delivery service providers&comma; or landscapers to determine when homes are unoccupied before committing burglaries&period; As a reminder&comma; remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity helps keep our neighborhoods safe&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p><strong>What to watch out for&colon;<&sol;strong><&sol;p>&NewLine;<ul>&NewLine;<li>Small or concealed cameras placed near homes to monitor activity<&sol;li>&NewLine;<&sol;ul>&NewLine;<ul>&NewLine;<li>Individuals ringing doorbells or posing as delivery drivers to see if anyone answers<&sol;li>&NewLine;<&sol;ul>&NewLine;<ul>&NewLine;<li>Packages left at doors to test whether a home is vacant<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>Unfamiliar vehicles or people repeatedly passing by a residence<&sol;li>&NewLine;<&sol;ul>&NewLine;<p><strong>What you should do&colon;<&sol;strong><&sol;p>&NewLine;<ul>&NewLine;<li>Do <strong data-start&equals;"846" data-end&equals;"853">not<&sol;strong> touch suspicious devices if possible<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>Be cautious of unexpected visitors or deliveries<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>Check your property regularly for unfamiliar devices or objects<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>Retrieve packages promptly or ask a neighbor to help when you’re away<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>Use outdoor lighting&comma; doorbell cameras&comma; or alarm systems when possible<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>Report any suspicious activity or objects immediately to the San José Police Department<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li><strong>Emergency&colon;<&sol;strong> Call 911<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li><strong>Non-Emergency&colon;<&sol;strong> &lpar;408&rpar; 277-8900<&sol;li>&NewLine;<&sol;ul>&NewLine;<p>On January 29&comma; 2026&comma; at approximately 2&colon;44 a&period;m&period;&comma; San Jose police officers responded to a report of a suspicious circumstance that occurred in a neighborhood located in the east side of San José&period; The preliminary investigation revealed unknown suspects had concealed a camouflaged camera in the bushes outside a residence&period; The suspects then fled the scene and the camera was later discovered by the homeowner&period; Upon arrival&comma; Officers collected the camera&comma; which was attached to a power bank and positioned facing the residence&period; It is believed the camera was used to monitor the occupants of the residence in preparation for a burglary or other criminal activity&period; The suspects remain outstanding&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>SJPD Burglary Unit Detectives immediately began a comprehensive investigation into the incident&period; During the course of the investigation&comma; Detectives located a second camouflaged device near the area of where the first camera was located&period; The second device was believed to be a Wi-Fi powered device &lpar;pictured above&rpar;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;
