Facebook has introduced a new community feature called Marketplace which lets users connect to buy and sell items from others in their local area. The service could be a threat to classified sites like Craigslist and eBay.
Users can post items for sale directly from the Facebook app. Interested buyers can message sellers directly and work out details for purchase. Facebook is not involved in payment or delivery of items in Marketplace.
Marketplace was created due to the huge interest in Facebook users buying and selling goods on Facebook Groups. The company said more than 450 million people were buying and selling from Groups each month, from families to collectors around the world.
Facebook is rolling out Marketplace in the next few days to everyone over 18 years old in the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand on the Facebook app for iPhone and Android. The company plans to expand to additional countries in the next few months and roll out it to desktop computer users. Marketplace is only for mobile users right now.
